1907 High Relief Double Eagle, AU53
    CAC Approved, Wire Rim

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim AU53 PCGS. CAC. The Wire Rim characteristic of the early High Relief Saint-Gaudens double eagles was viewed as a flaw by the Mint. The fin of metal along much of the rim was produced by the planchet being forced into a crack between the dies and the collar, an issue that the Mint did not experience to a significant extent when using a closed collar for the Liberty Head type. Saint-Gaudens' coin included relief edge devices, which necessitated a segmented collar, allowing for the "fin rim" problem to emerge. The issue was remedied later in the High Relief's production, but most surviving examples of this sought-after issue are of the familiar Wire Rim variety.

This CAC-approved About Uncirculated example shows a pronounced wire rim along the right half of the obverse border. A touch of high-point friction prevents Mint State classification, although satiny luster remains in the fields. The deep olive-gold and orange-tinted surfaces are original.
