Autographed Shaw Memorial Photo
And Signed Letter by Augustus Saint-Gaudens

Signed Photograph of the Shaw Memorial and Handwritten Letter From Augustus Saint-Gaudens, 1896. The large-sized photograph is almost 17 x 25 inches. The matting and frame add another 3 3/4 inches. The Shaw Memorial was one of Saint-Gaudens most widely admired and acclaimed monumental works. It is in Boston and took Saint-Gaudens almost 14 years to complete. It features Robert G. Shaw and the Massachusetts 54th Regiment of black soldiers, most of which were killed on an assault on Fort Wagner, South Carolina in 1863. The figures are in extremely high relief and all were based on actual men Saint-Gaudens chose to represent the soldiers. In the bottom right corner of the photograph (black and white, of course) is an autograph and above that is another line that was scratched through and is illegible. The interesting aspect of the signature is it is signed: Augustus St Gaudens. Traditional wisdom holds that Augustus always signed his name Saint-Gaudens, while his brother Louis signed his name St. Gaudens. Apparently that rule was not as absolute as previously believed.
Also included is a folded note card, 4 1/4 x 7 inches, that reads:

    "148 West 36 Street
    April 9/96

    "My dear Johann

I can easily have a photo ready of the Shaw monument by June but as I do not wish anything published of it until the unveiling it puts that date for its publication by you out of the question.
It will be unveiled either in the Fall of this year or the early Spring of next, the photo will then be at your service.

    Yours sincerely
    Augustus St Gaudens"
