    Description

Victoria "Proof" One Dollar 1866, KM10, reeded edge. There is still a great deal we don't know about Specimens, Proofs, and Patterns, like when and why they were struck, but from our observations we think...The Plain Edge 1866 "Pattern" Dollar was struck early in the year and since it was a new coin, great care was put into its production. It seems that throughout the year the odd piece had to be struck for a VIP or some sort of Presentation purpose. Whatever die that was on hand could be polished, and a fresh, polished planchet could be put in the die, struck, and then presented. This Dollar doesn't have much of the frosted design of the plain edge pieces, but it is VERY obvious that these pieces were specially struck for an important purpose. Also, it should be noted that there is a bit of die rust on the reverse that would imply that the coin was struck a little later in the die's life and that the polishing wasn't completely effective in ridding the coin of any imperfections. The reverse also has a more frosted look than the obverse. This is a Choice coin with the blue edge patina that is very consistent with what the British call "cabinet toning". One small mark is evident at the back of Victoria's bust.
