Description
Hermann Roth gold 10 Ducats ND (1690-1726) MS62 NGC, Kremnitz mint, Fr-571 var, Huszar-8. An impressive, mint-state example of this seldom encountered, medallic-gold issue that features beautifully-illustrative design motifs. The obverse depicts St. George slaying the dragon with impeccable detail and the reverse presents dramatic imagery of Christ asleep on a boat with five frantic apostles, attempting to weather a tempestuous storm, IN TEMPESTATE SECURITAS (In the storm (is) safety) surrounding. A small "R" is present on the obverse, and it is quite possible that this variation was struck under Jeremias Roth Senior who typically signed his medals "R" and whose dates overlap with Hermann Roth. A highly interesting selection from these medallic issues that were struck in Kremnitz beginning in the 17th century. Thought to bring good luck and protection from harm, these pieces were typically carried by their owners. A specimen that boasts both technical quality and rich symbolism, highly engaging as such.Auction Info
