Description
Leopold I gold Ducat 1696-KV MS65 NGC, Klausenburg mint, KM-509, Fr-495. 3.45gm. This beautiful and scarce issue of Leopold I, one of the most complex and longest-reigning of Holy Roman Emperors, appears as if freshly struck, with a veil of peach-gold atop unhandled devices. The smallest details on the blazon, including the characteristic eagle and seven towers, survive virtually unscathed and leave the viewer with the profound impression of quality. Sitting alone at the peak of the census by a full four points, a better representative of this type is unlikely to surface anytime soon, or ever.Coinage in Transylvania took on special importance in this period as several kingdoms, not least the powerful Holy Roman and Ottoman Empires, vied for control. In 1687, the ruling elite of Transylvania recognized the suzerainty of Leopold I while winning the concession that the territory would be administratively separated from other Habsburg territories, thus ensuring a modicum of local governing autonomy.
