British India. "Fort William College" gold Medal 1800-Dated MS63 NGC, Puddester-800.1. 44mm. 48.45gm. Obv: View of a mosque and pagoda, in the background palm trees and sailing ship on sea, above radiant sun. Legend: REDIT A NOBIS AURORA DIEMQUE REDUCIT. Rev: College of Fort William - Honorary Medal within laurel wreath. Lord Wellesley, the then Governor General of India, decided there was a need to provide training and education to the foreign staff of the East India Company and officers in the British Army. As a result, the Fort William College was built in Calcutta, opening in 1800. This "Honorary Medal" is a beautiful example of a type we haven't handled before, featuring a lovely scene on the obverse and tangerine-gold patination.
