Description

Storied 1939 Rupee

British India. George VI Rupee 1939-(b) MS62 NGC, Bombay mint, KM555, S&W-9.13, Prid-235. Reeded edge. Following the cessation of silver Rupee coinage after 1922, production resumed only in late 1939-1940 to support wartime economic demand, with most 1938-dated pieces struck in 1940. The elusive 1939 Rupee, believed to have been minted in very small numbers and surviving in only 1-2% of its original mintage, is considered one of the key rarities of the series. Pretty toning highlights this exquisite representative from one of the great trophies in 20th-century British Indian numismatics, very seldom encountered finer.
