Description
British India. "Siege and Capture of Seringapatam" silver Medal 1799-Dated (c.1808) MS64 NGC, Calcutta mint, Eimer-903b. 45mm. After C. H. Kuchler. Whilst 850 Soho Mint silver medals were awarded to the captains and subalterns, a further 2,786 Calcutta Mint pieces were given to Indian soldiers of the Bengal Presidency present at Seringapatam. The Calcutta medals lack the fine detail of Küchler's pieces. They are a little smaller, a die crack runs from above the A of MAY in the exergue, through the Y and on to the edge, and the sun on the reverse shows much less detail compared to the original. This piece however is certainly a rare find, as although it is not an original Soho mint production, these Calcutta issues are very scarce, and this is a particularly wonderful example. The present near-Gem specimen, cloaked in gunmetal patination, is the lone representative of the Calcutta type populating NGC's census.Metal: Silver
Diameter: 45mm
Estimate: $6,000 - $8,000.
