    Description

British India. William IV 1/2 Rupee 1835.-(c) MS65 NGC, Calcutta mint, KM449.2, S&W-1.58. Type C Bust, Type III Reverse. Unheard-of quality for William IV's Indian coinage, the coin at hand stands tied with a single other example, out of 19 certified for the type at NGC, at the peak of the census with none certified finer by PCGS. Clearly struck from a reworked pair of dies, numerous die cracks visible throughout and clear recutting visible in the king's ordinal, an irregular area of die damage appears around 2 o'clock--not to be confused with scratches, as the area appears raised with die polish lines. The only other MS65 example we can direct the prospective bidder's attention to hammered for an astonishing $4250 in CNG's August 2014 joint sale of the Lissner Collection (lot 501).
