Description

William IV Proof Rupee 1835, KM-450.2, PF65 PCGS. This Rupee is moderately toned with the typical medal die axis of this 'F' raised series, and was struck at the Calcutta mint. Original Proof or mid 19th century 'restrike'. There is a bit of die rust on William's bust that 'hints' of a slightly later striking, but we note that in the recent London sale, where some of the best British Indian coins came on the market for the first time in decades, that there is no mention of die rust except on two 1834 Original Pattern Rupees currently housed in the British Museum. This piece is even more interesting in that it is obviously double struck, which is especially discernable on the reverse where the two strikings are only 1 mm apart. A point was noted in the London sale that the rarity of the very early restrikes and the original proofs is much the same, and these should be valued accordingly.
