Description

Maratha Confederacy. Unknown Ruler Rupee AH 1207 Year 34 (1792/1793) MS65 NGC, Saharanpur mint, KM308. An icy Gem specimen in impeccable preservation, lovely to behold.

The Maratha Confederacy, or Maratha Empire, originated as a resistance to the Sultanate of Bijapur and the Mughals in the mid to late 1600s. A record of major military successes led to the expansion of Maratha dominance across the subcontinent, though the loss at Panipat prompted more regional leadership and autonomy for what would then be known as the Maratha Confederacy. The decline of the Confederacy was marked by conflict through the Anglo-Mysore Wars and the Anglo-Maratha Wars; the Marathas fell to British control in 1818 as the last major opposition in India.
