Description

Vijayanagar-Telugu. Venkatapiraya III gold Pagoda ND (1630-1642) XF45 NGC, Fr-372. This piece displays Venkateshwara standing under arch on obverse, and Devanagari legend in three lines on reverse.

Most notable during the reign of Venkatapiraya, or simply Venkata III, was the transfer of land to the East India Company for factory construction on August 22, 1639. This event would later be regarded as the founding of the Madras Metropolis and is still celebrated as Madras Day.
