Description

Crisply Struck 1864 Copper-Nickel Cent, MS66

1864 1C Copper-Nickel MS66 NGC. This Premium Gem 1864 copper-nickel cent has uncharacteristically orange-red luster, that at first glance makes one think that this coin might in fact be bronze. Upon examination by several catalogers, however, we believe the piece to indeed be copper-nickel. We weighed the encapsulated coin on a gram scale, comparing its weight to an NGC-holdered Mint State bronze Indian cent, and found the former heavier than the latter. Also, the feathers in the headdress of the copper-nickel coins appear to be slightly narrower than those of the bronze cent. The strike leaves crisp definition on the devices, and both sides are nicely preserved. Census: 14 in 66, 0 finer (8/07).(Registry values: N2998)
