1864 L On Ribbon Indian Cent
MS67 Red and Brown
The Sole Finest at PCGS

1864 1C L On Ribbon MS67 Red and Brown PCGS. Mint Engraver James B. Longacre placed his initial L on the ribbon behind Liberty's neck on the Indian cent in 1864. Some numismatists have speculated that he intended the change to coincide with the transition from the original copper-nickel alloy to bronze, although in practice No L dies were used for the earliest bronze coinage.

The 1864 L on Ribbon cent's Mint State population is heavily weighted in the Red and Brown color category, but any example of this issue finer than MS65 is a rarity. The current Superb Gem has the distinction of being the sole finest example numerically graded at PCGS, regardless of color designation (a single Red and Brown coin is in the same grade at NGC (3/25). The coin is sharply struck and lustrous with original golden and coppery-amber hues. Devoid of spotting, and simply beautiful in every respect.(Registry values: N4719)
