Description

1865 Indian Cent, MS66 Red
Fancy 5 Date Style

1865 1C Fancy 5 MS66 Red PCGS. CAC. Ex: Perfection 1. The date is from the Fancy 5 logotype punch, and this piece is tied for the finest of those coins. Both sides exhibit a bold strike with excellent design definition. The pristine surfaces display brilliant orange mint color and frosty luster. An coin of rare beauty. The Plain 5 and Fancy 5 variants are about equal in rarity, although Richard Snow reports that the Plain 5 is marginally scarcer. Snow reports that full Red Gems are extremely difficult to locate without problems. Here is one such coin. Properly CAC endorsed, one of four pieces so-recognized in 66 Red and none finer. PCGS population: 11 in 66 Red, 0 finer (11/15).
