Description

1865 Cent, MS66 Red
Radiant 'Fancy 5' Example

1865 1C Fancy 5 MS66 Red PCGS. The use of the Fancy 5 punch in the date, with a curved, "hooked" flag at the top represents a one-year type, since no other date in the series features the Fancy 5 numeral. Lower-grade Mint State examples are fairly plentiful, but fully Red representatives are elusive and those achieving the MS66 grade level are decidedly rare. This example is fully struck, with notable sharpness on the headdress feathers and the wreath, while subtle violet highlights appear over the vibrantly lustrous, tangerine-orange surfaces. A few areas of light die clashing are seen, but the surfaces are free of any distracting marks. Only one or two microscopic carbon flecks are seen with a glass. Population: 10 in 66 Red, 0 finer (9/14).(Registry values: N2998)
