Description

1865 Plain 5 Cent, MS66+ Red
Conditionally Rare Subtype

1865 1C Plain 5 MS66+ Red PCGS. CAC. Cent production in 1865 surpassed 35.4 million coins, rendering this one of the more plentiful early bronze issues in the Indian cent series. However, the survivorship is divided between the two date logotypes for the year, which adds collector interest and in many cases creates two distinct issues for collectors to acquire, depending on the parameters of their collection. The Plain 5 variant was issued first and is the scarcer of the two. Rick Snow calls the flag on the 5 punch "banana shaped" on the Plain 5 dies, as it is not truly straight as might be assumed from its moniker. Still, it is "more straight" than the Fancy 5 coins, which show a sharp upward hook to the flag.

This Premium Gem Red Plain 5 coin is tied for the finest certified, a major rarity for the advanced Registry collector. A sharp strike characterizes each side, and satiny golden-orange luster is spot-free and unabraded. Outstanding eye appeal prevails throughout. Population: 5 in 66 (3 in 66+) Red, 0 finer. CAC: 5 in 66, 0 finer (1/25).(Registry values: P6)
