Description

1867 Cent, MS66 Red
One of the Two Finest Known

1867 1C MS66 ★ Red NGC. Gem Red examples of the 1867 Indian cent are occasionally available for a price, but finer coins are often considered unobtainable due to their extreme rarity. The only such coin at PCGS is a lone MS66 Red example, and the present MS66 ★ Red coin is the only piece at NGC finer than MS65 Red (11/16). Thus, this is an important opportunity for the Registry Set collector to acquire one of the two finest-known 1867 Indian cents, one that may not be repeated for many years. Neither of the top two coin has previously been sold at public auction, and several of the Gem Red coins known have traded hands for five-figure prices within the last decade.

This piece is distinctive for its frosty luster and booming fire-orange and cherry-red surfaces. The strike is sharp, and a loupe reveals no mentionable carbon spots or abrasions. Several thin, mint-made die lines appear on the portrait when viewed beneath a loupe. Eye appeal is truly exceptional, making this piece arguably the finest known.(Registry values: N7079)
