1871 Indian Cent, Elusive MS65 Red
Tied for Finest at CAC

1871 1C MS65 Red PCGS. CAC. Ex: Perfection 1. Bold N reverse, as usually seen. The 1871 Indian cent date is an elusive one, one of the rarest dates in the series due to the unusual machinations surrounding the Mint Act of 1871. This MS65 Red PCGS-CAC example is a standout coin, one of only 17 such submissions at PCGS and surpassed by only two in MS66 Red. Factoring in the CAC green approval sticker makes this piece one of only two in this grade at CAC, and none are finer in this color designation (CAC also has approved one MS66 Brown coin) (1/16).

The surfaces on this piece are far finer than usual, showing attractive golden-orange patina with glints of lilac on some of the high points, all well within the Red context. A small, curved scrape appears in the obverse field above the third feather and a tiny dark fleck near the rim at 9 o'clock. A wispy die crack runs from the top of the E in UNITED to that same area. A small tick shows on the high point of the cheek, but none of these are overly distracting. The strike is quite sharp throughout both sides, also unusual for this date. For a date that is usually found well-circulated or with subpar surfaces, this coin is simply among the finest that any collector could hope to obtain of this difficult date.
