Description

1877 Cent, MS65 Red and Brown
Far Fewer Survive Than Generally Thought

1877 1C MS65 Red and Brown PCGS Secure. The key to the Indian cent series, the 1877 issue, at 852,500 pieces struck, was the lowest-mintage cent coinage that the Mint had produced since the 1823 large cent. Even then, Bowers writes in his Indian cent Guide Book that, because only two obverse dies and a single reverse are known, the number struck (and not melted) was likely only 200,000 pieces or so. A Gem Red and Brown 1877 Indian cent such as this piece makes an especially nice compromise between price and quality when as much original red remains as here; Gem Red coins are far more expensive. The only mark of note is along the Indian's jawline. The usual minor strike weakness appears on the tips of the upper feathers in the headdress. Population: 58 in 65 (1 in 65+) Red and Brown, 3 finer (7/12).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 2284, PCGS# 2128)

    Weight: 3.11 grams
