Description

1878 Cent, Sharply Struck MS66 Red

1878 1C MS66 Red PCGS. CAC. Although the 1878 cent is known to have circulated well into the 20th century, enough were saved so that finding an Uncirculated example is "relatively easy" (Snow, 2009). The population reports show that the date is fairly available through near-Gem, and that even MS65s can be located with searching. That said, this situation appears to apply only to Brown and Red and Brown coins. PCGS and NGC have graded only about 145 fully Red specimens, of which 50 or so are MS65 or better.

Copper-gold luster endows this Red Premium Gem, and the design elements are sharply struck, including the feather tips, all four diamonds, and the reverse wreath and shield. Both sides are free of mentionable marks or spots. Highly pleasing eye appeal is aptly recognized by CAC. Population: 14 in 66 Red, 1 finer (7/14).(Registry values: N2998)
