Description

1882 Indian Cent, MS66 Red
Only Two Finer at PCGS

1882 1C MS66 Red PCGS. This impressive Premium Gem, housed in a green-label PCGS holder, exhibits brilliant orange mint luster with slight mellowing on each side. The strike is bold and the eye appeal is spectacular.

Variety: Normal dies. There are no die characteristics that match any of the nine varieties recorded in The Flying Eagle & Indian Cent Attribution Guide, third edition, by Richard E. Snow. The author reports that 74 obverse dies were prepared for the cent coinage of 1882, suggesting the possibility of many more variety discoveries.

Population Data (3/15): PCGS reports 21 in MS66 Red and two in MS67 Red.

Heritage Commentary: Given the large mintage exceeding 38 million coins, it is almost a certainty that new varieties will be discovered in the future by sharp-eyed cherrypickers.
