1909 Indian Cent, MS67+ Red
Tied for Finest Known, CAC Approved
1909 1C MS67+ Red PCGS. CAC. The year 1909 was transitional
for the small cent design, encompassing the introduction of
Brenner's Lincoln and wheat ears design and the retirement of
Longacre's long-running Indian Head and oak wreath. Although more
than 14.3 million 1909 Indian cents were struck, this is a slightly
better date in the series, as most dates had mintages several times
that quantity. Surviving examples of the 1909 are somewhat
plentiful, although they become conditionally rare at the lofty
Superb Gem Red grade level, where the current coin resides. This
piece displays satiny mint luster bathed in vivid copper-orange and
golden hues, without distracting spots or abrasions. An
above-average strike completes the eye appeal and adds to the
coin's strong merits as a Registry coin. Population: 20 in 67 (4 in
