Gorgeous, Condition Rarity 1909 Indian Cent, MS67 Red
1909 1C MS67 Red PCGS. In his Buyer's and Enthusiast's Guide to Flying Eagle and Indian Cents, David Bowers writes that the 1909 is one of the most plentiful Mint State Indian cents despite its somewhat low mintage (14,368,470 business strikes). Bowers says: "Bright red specimens are among the most common issues, although this date has sometimes been called 'scarce' in this regard, no doubt by catalogers who look at the mintage figure and consider little else."A perusal of the population data indicate that more than 2,000 Mint State 1909 full Red Indian cents have been certified by PCGS and NGC, primarily in MS64 and MS65 grades, confirming the availability of this issue in high grade. In Superb Gem Red, however, the classification of the coin in this lot, the 1909 is anything but common. The two services have seen only six such coins, and none finer.
Gorgeous yellow-gold surfaces radiate glowing luster, and an attentive strike imparts excellent delineation to the design elements. All four diamonds are crisp, though the feather tips exhibit the usual softness. Impeccably preserved surfaces are devoid of mentionable abrasions or spots. Population: 4 in 67 Red, 0 finer (8/07).(Registry values: N2998)
