Description

Key Date Gem 1909-S Indian Cent

1909-S 1C MS65 Red NGC. The first small cents struck in San Francisco were coined a year earlier in 1908. These and the 1909 Indian cents represent the very first minor coins produced in San Francisco. The economy of the western city and surrounding area, previous to this time, was in need of silver and gold coins to provide change in larger transactions. One and five cent coins were simply not needed in the 19th century. Sharply struck, rich sunset-red luster, and frosty surfaces, destined to become a highlight in the successful bidder's cabinet. Both sides are void of abrasions and spots. Census: 48 in 65 Red, 5 finer (10/06).
