Description
1909-S Indian Head Cent, MS66 Red
Conditionally Rare Key
1909-S 1C MS66 Red PCGS. CAC. Ex: Heathgate. The year 1909
was an active one in the production of cents, one that saw the Mint
transition away from the 60-year-old Indian Head design by Longacre
to a new Lincoln cent by Victor David Brenner. Only 309,000 Indian
Head cents were struck at the San Francisco Mint early in 1909
before the new design was authorized. The coins were released into
circulation with little fanfare. Few examples were set aside, as
most collectors were far more interested in coins of the new
Lincoln design, especially those bearing the VDB initials, which
were rumored to be recalled. In MS66 Red, the semikey 1909-S Indian
cent is a major condition rarity, especially with the approval of
CAC.This Premium Gem boasts incredibly strong detail for the issue, notably on the usually-soft feathertips. Glowing copper-gold surfaces are minimally marked with a single tick in the field near the I in UNITED. Population: 27 in 66 (3 in 66+) Red, 1 finer. CAC: 6 in 66, 0 finer (10/17).
