    Description

    1864 Bronze Cent, PR64 Brown
    Rare L on Ribbon Variety
    Snow-PR2, Breen Plate Coin

1864 1C L On Ribbon PR64 Brown PCGS. Snow-PR2. James B. Longacre's initial L was added to the Indian cent design in 1864, on the ribbon immediately behind Liberty's neck. The proof 1864 L On Ribbon cent has long been the biggest prize of the series. In The Flying Eagle and Indian Cent Attribution Guide, third edition, Rick Snow estimates the mintage at only 25 pieces. He further writes: "Buyers know that the opportunity to own this issue is so rare that a 'buy it at all cost' mentality is usually needed to obtain an example."

PCGS and NGC combined report just 26 grading events for the issue, most of which are Brown or Red and Brown. This figure may be slightly inflated. Snow records 21 coins in his roster, comprising three different die varieties. Snow-PR2, offered here, is the most often available, with 12 examples documented. This piece is the plate coin for Walter Breen's proof Encyclopedia. Although it is designated Brown, there is lively color on each side in shades of gold, mint-green, violet, and blue. The strike is sharp and eye appeal is outstanding. An exceptional example of this remarkable series rarity. Population: 2 in 64 Brown, 2 finer; 2 in 64 Red and Brown, 6 finer; 3 in 64 Red, 0 finer; 1 in 64 Red Cameo, 1 finer (10/18).
