Description

    Near-Gem 1907 No Motto Eagle

1907 $10 No Motto MS64 NGC. Because 1907 was the first year of issue, many were saved as keepsakes, which accounts for the relatively large number of better-grade Uncirculated coins around today. Indeed, nearly 1,000 near-Gems have been certified by NGC and PCGS combined. This example displays fully lustrous, apricot-gold surfaces with tinges of light green undertones. The design elements are adequately brought up, though portions of the Indian's hair are soft. The grade is defined by minute marks on the cheek, on the eagle's upper breast, and in the upper left (facing) reverse field. A couple of minor rim marks on the right (facing) obverse are also mentioned for accuracy.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 28GF, PCGS# 8852)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
