1907 Rolled Edge Eagle, AU55
Exceptional First-Year Rarity
All But 50 Coins Melted

1907 $10 Rolled Rim AU55 PCGS. CAC. Always in demand from collectors, the 1907 Rolled Edge Indian eagle is the second-rarest issue in the entire series, trailing only the extremely rare 1933 issue. The Rolled Edge coins were meant to solve the problems of their Wire Rim pattern predecessors, but wound up creating problems of their own. In the September 10, 2007 edition of Coin World, Roger W. Burdette and Jeff Reichenberger discuss the reasoning behind the Rolled Edge coins:

"The first version of [Saint-Gaudens] $10 coin had no properly defined rim, made a wobbly stack when the experimental pieces were piled, and required the use of a medal press to bring up the design.
"To remedy these defects, [Chief Engraver Charles] Barber made a new set of hubs and dies from the same set of models as before. But this time, he cut a well defined rim into the hubs. Experimental pieces demonstrated that the relief was low enough that the coins could be struck on ordinary presses. These were shown to the Treasury secretary and President Roosevelt and approved.
"This second gold eagle version had the design in slightly higher than normal relief. The fields ended at a well defined rim on which the coins could sit when stacked. On the reverse, the legends had small text stops - usually called periods - at ends of each inscription, just as on the first version.
"The Philadelphia Mint struck 31,500 pieces of the second version on normal coinage presses in late September 1907 and the coins seemed destined for release across the country."

Unfortunately, the Rolled Edge coins were usually softly struck in the centers and Mint Superintendent John Landis was not happy with the new design. Accordingly, the Rolled Edge design was abandoned, in favor of the No Periods motif, and the great majority of the coins was melted before any were distributed. However, Mint Director Frank Leach reportedly saved 50 examples from the melting pot for numismatic purposes. The surviving coins were distributed to various persons, with a few likely ending up as pocket pieces as evidenced by the small number of lightly worn examples known today. PCGS CoinFacts estimates that only about 40 to 42 examples survive, far fewer than the certified population reports would suggest, as the figures have been skewed by resubmissions and crossovers.

The present coin is an impressive Choice AU specimen that exhibits just a trace of wear on the high points of the design elements. A touch of the usual softness is seen on Liberty's curls and the eagle's shoulder. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces are lightly abraded and retain much original mint luster. Overall eye appeal is quite strong and the high quality within the grade is confirmed by CAC. The 1907 Rolled Edge Indian eagle is listed among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins.(Registry values: N7079)
