    Famous 1907 Wire Rim Saint-Gaudens Eagle, MS64

1907 $10 Wire Rim MS64 PCGS. The making of the 500 Wire Rim or Wire Edge Saint-Gaudens eagles dated 1907 was something of a command performance, according to letters reprinted in Roger W. Burdette's Renaissance of American Coinage. In one such letter, dated August 22nd, President Theodore Roosevelt sent to Secretary of the Treasury George B. Cortelyou an implicit threat to the superintendent of the Philadelphia Mint, suggesting that he would find a replacement who would "be put in charge to make the [Saint-Gaudens eagles] forthwith."
Two days letter, spurred by a letter received from William D. Sohier, a self-described "old friend" of the President's, Roosevelt sent another, more terse message to Cortelyou, the first paragraph of which read: "Perhaps the mint people ought to see the enclosed letter. Let them tell me when the new eagles and double eagles will appear. I hope a fortnight." Within a week, samples from a batch of 500 pieces, in high relief but with Charles Barber's knife-rim added to protect the design, were made available to Roosevelt, and he expressed his approval, largely defusing the tension between the President and the Mint.
This near-Gem comes from that prized early batch of Wire Rim eagles, struck on a medal press with the rims prominent and periods separating the words on the reverse. Orange-accented yellow-gold surfaces have the warm and dramatic luster peculiar to this issue, which has attracted generations of collectors to this famous variety. Pleasingly preserved for the grade assigned and housed in a green label holder.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 26F2, PCGS# 8850)
