Description

    1907 Wire Rim Ten, MS65
    Superior Mint Luster

1907 $10 Wire Rim MS65 NGC. A complete collection of the 1907 Indian Head coins would include the 1907 Wire Rim, Periods variety, considered to be a pattern issue but collected alongside the later 1907 issues. Somewhere around 500 of these pieces were distributed to VIPs to show off the new Saint-Gaudens design, and many survive today in a range of grades. Next came the 1907 Rounded Rim, Periods variety, the first production design of the Saint-Gaudens eagles. Although somewhere north of 31,500 pieces were struck, all but 50 were apparently melted at the insistence of Mint Engraver Charles E. Barber, who objected to "outsiders" designing U.S. coinage. Barber's reinterpretation was thus the first to circulate widely, the so-called 1907 No Periods eagles.

The 1907 Wire Rims are prized by collectors today as the first Indian Head eagles, those that are the most faithful to the original artistic vision of Saint-Gaudens and President Theodore Roosevelt. Wire Rim tens all display bright yellow-gold surfaces, replete with swirling die polishing marks, and the higher graded pieces (such as this one) display vibrant mint frost. On this coin, the yellow-gold color is tempered by reddish patina with occasional dabs of lilac. The only notable marks are a longer, diagonal mark on the lower obverse to the left of the date, and on the reverse there is a short abrasion just above the LU in PLURIBUS. These marks are trivial and do little (or nothing) to affect the remarkable appeal of this Gem example.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 26F2, PCGS# 8850)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
