Coveted Gem 1907 Wire Rim Ten
1907 $10 Wire Rim MS65 PCGS. The Wire Rim Saint-Gaudens eagles were the first examples of the late sculptor's design struck in quantity, though they were not made available until the release of the No Periods variant to banks. Despite today's collector appreciation of the Wire Rim ten dollar piece's inherent beauty, even the limited mintage of 500 pieces did not achieve full distribution right away, being at the disposal of others, including Secretary of the Treasury George Cortelyou and President Theodore Roosevelt. Roger Burdette, in his Renaissance of American Coinage, notes that "[t]he 500 [Wire Rim] eagles were to satisfy any possible request from Roosevelt. These were an 'insurance policy' put in place by Cortelyou against additional presidential rage."After Saint-Gaudens eagles and twenties were released to the public, the coins were no longer necessary for that role, but rather than being melted, they were turned over to the Treasury for sale to collectors, at first for face value. Burdette notes that after the first wave of interested numismatists had made their purchases, the coins were next offered "to members of Congress and other influential persons in private transactions. In 1912 the balance was transferred to the mint cabinet where they were sold to coin dealers" for $15 apiece.
This warm sun-yellow Gem offers gorgeous luster and marvelous eye appeal. Each side is minimally marked with suggestions of patina. A small alloy fleck below the I of UNITED on the reverse is mentioned solely for accuracy. In sum, a marvelous example of this coveted early Saint-Gaudens eagle.(Registry values: N7079)
