Description
1907 Indian Eagle, MS65
Rare Wire Rim Variant
Net Mintage of 472 Coins
1907 $10 Wire Rim MS65 PCGS. Designed by Augustus
Saint-Gaudens, America's foremost sculptor, with the collaboration
of President Theodore Roosevelt, the 1907 Wire Edge With Periods
Indian eagle is listed as Judd-1901 in the 10th edition of the
leading pattern reference. However, USPatterns.com considers the
coins business strikes, rather than patterns, and numismatists have
enthusiastically adopted them into the regular Indian eagle series.
The issue is avidly pursued by advanced type collectors, as well.
Heritage Auctions is privileged to present an attractive Gem
specimen of this important gold rarity in this important
offering.Research by Roger W. Burdette reveals that 500 examples were struck in late August through early September of 1907, and an additional 42 specimens were produced by the end of the year. Records indicate 70 coins remained undistributed and were later melted, leaving a net distribution of just 472 examples. Unfortunately, the high relief of the design elements and Wire Rim around the circumference of the coins made it difficult to stack them for counting purposes and it was feared that the rim would wear down quickly, causing the coins to be underweight. Chief Engraver Charles Barber modified the design to include a more practical Rolled Rim in September and the Wire Rim design was quickly abandoned. None of the coins were released into circulation. Instead, they were acquired by Congressmen, Treasury Department officials, museums, coin dealers, and favored collectors who ordered them. Henry Chapman and Thomas Elder both secured a supply that they marketed to their customers for years afterward. At first, the novelty of Saint-Gaudens' design created intense collector demand for the issue. Later, the limited distribution caused resentment among rank and file collectors who felt frozen out of the process. The 1907 Wire Rim Indian eagles are among the most sought-after issues of the series today.
The present coin is a spectacular Gem, with impeccably preserved orange-gold surfaces and vibrant satiny mint luster throughout. The design elements are well-detailed, with some of the characteristic softness of the issue at the peripheries. Overall eye appeal is outstanding. This lot represents an important opportunity for 20th century gold collectors, pattern enthusiasts, and type collectors, alike. Population: 75 in 65 (9 in 65+), 31 finer (7/25).
