1907 Wire Rim Ten Dollar, MS66
    Bright Surfaces, Deep Orange-Gold Patina

1907 $10 Wire Rim MS66 NGC. CAC. Although many collectors assemble their sets by type or by date, the collecting of a complete run of 1907-dated eagles would make a healthy flock in itself. The set would start with the three 1907-PDS Liberty Head issues, one of which, the 1907-S, is far more elusive in Mint State than generally thought. The Wire Rim 1907 eagle of the Saint-Gaudens design would follow, of course; even though the Wire Rim is classified as a pattern, the point is moot due to the large number of collectors who include it in the complete set. Perhaps a couple of hundred examples survive today over a wide grade range, including some "affordable" and some spectacularly nice pieces. The Rolled Rim 1907 would be the fifth entry in the set, a melt rarity since all but 50 or so were melted at the insistence of Charles Barber. The final issue in the set would be the modified Barber 1907 eagle, known as the No Periods to distinguish it from the Wire Rim and Rolled Rim, both of which have periods or triangular stops in the legends.
The present 1907 Wire Rim would certainly be an excellent start on this new collecting challenge. The surfaces exhibit the always-seen swirling die polish marks in the fields, which impart a predictable brightness to the surfaces. This example displays even, rich orange-gold color; quite different from the usual yellow-gold most Wire Rims show. The surfaces are essentially perfect with no distinctive contact marks on either side. Census: 20 in 66 (1 in 66+), 9 finer (12/12).(Registry values: N10218) (NGC ID# 26F2, PCGS# 8850)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
