1908-D Indian Eagle, MS66
Underrated With Motto Issue

1908-D $10 Motto MS66 NGC. The design of the Indian eagle was slightly modified partway through the year in 1908 to include the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on the reverse, an important consideration for type purposes. The 1908-D Indian eagle, With Motto, claims a large mintage of 836,500 pieces, but the issue is decidedly more elusive than that production total would suggest. Much of the mintage was likely held in government storage and later melted. Only a handful of specimens have survived at the MS66 grade level.
This spectacular Premium Gem exhibits sharply detailed design elements throughout. The well-preserved orange-gold surfaces show a few hints of lilac, with radiant mint luster on both sides. Overall eye appeal is terrific. Mike Fuljenz considers the 1908-D, With Motto, one of the most underrated issues in the series. NGC Census: 4 in 66 (1 in 66+), 3 finer (3/26).
