    1908-D No Motto Ten, MS65+
    Superlative Type Coin

1908-D $10 No Motto MS65+ PCGS. CAC. The new Saint-Gaudens design for the Indian Head eagles was introduced in 1907 to the general public via the 1907 No Periods issue, struck to the extent of nearly a quarter-million pieces. The 1908 Philadelphia and Denver ten dollar issues were both fairly low-mintage affairs, as the motto IN GOD WE TRUST was placed on the coins as mandated by Congress over the objections of President Theodore Roosevelt, and the 1908 With Motto issues from Philadelphia and Denver saw much larger productions.

The 1908-D No Motto issue had a mintage of 210,000 pieces while the 1908 Philadelphia No Motto only saw 33,500 struck. But despite the difference in mintages, the 1908-D No Motto is highly elusive at the Gem level. Michael Fuljenz writes of the issue in Indian Gold Coins of the 20th Century:

"The 1908-D No Motto issue is just about as rare overall as its Philadelphia Mint counterpart, despite possessing a much larger mintage. This is due mostly to a lack of continued interest in the novelty of the new design and as a result very few were actually saved."

Fuljenz ranks the 1908-D No Motto eighth most elusive in the series out of 32 in rarity at the Gem level. The present piece is certified MS65+ by PCGS and also boasts the CAC endorsement. The bright, swirling mint luster is more suggestive of an S-mint than a D-mint. The strike is sharp throughout both sides. The rich reddish-gold patina shows slight accents of lilac when closely examined, over surfaces that show a granular texture typical of the issue. A superlative type coin. Population: 3 in 65 (1 in 65+), 5 finer (1/13).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 28GH, PCGS# 8854)
