    1908-S Eagle, A Flashy MS63
    Sharply Struck and Lustrous

1908-S $10 MS63 PCGS. CAC. The 1908-S ten dollar, just shy of a mintage of 60,000 pieces, is slightly more available in Mint State, at least through near-Gem, despite its low production. A partial explanation may be gleaned from Walter Breen's Encyclopedia where he writes: "Uncs. are from 2 small hoards, one (of at least 20) found in the 1940s, the other (fewer, choice) from Europe in the 1970s."

This Select specimen displays vibrant luster emanating from gold-orange surfaces imbued with traces of ice-blue and lavender. Sharp detail is visible on the design elements, including the Indian's headdress feathers and hair and the eagle's plumage. This coin is just a couple of faint marks from a higher grade. In any event, it is a flashy piece for an MS63, aptly recognized by CAC. Housed in a prior generation holder. Population: 45 in 63 (1 in 63+), 67 finer (11/13).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 28GL, PCGS# 8861)

Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
