A Connoisseur's Delight Superb Gem 1908-S Indian Eagle

1908-S $10 MS68 PCGS. One of the very finest of this date and a superb and attractive coin for the specialist. The strike is sharp throughout and the luster is magnificent for this elusive date. History reports that 59,850 eagles were struck during 1908 by the San Francisco Mint. Recall that San Francisco was still reeling from the devastating earthquake of 1906 which consumed much of that city. The San Francisco Mint survived not only the earthquake but the devastating conflagration which followed, and coinage continued during this difficult time. A handful of Superb Gems are known of this date, but not many, and survival was simply a matter of chance. We note a faint tick on Liberty's high cheekbone, and a couple more on her chin, but these are very faint and scarcely noticeable. A few more faint ticks are found on the truncation just above the 19 of the date. The reverse is similarly attractive, with a few minute ticks on the eagle, and we note a small line in the middle right field beyond the final A of AMERICA close to the rim, and this is where some tiny fragment adhered to the die prior to striking and is similar to a lint mark on a proof coin. The combined NGC and PCGS population reports note six examples have been graded this high with none seen finer.
