Description

1909-D Ten Dollar Indian, MS65
One of Only 15 or So Gems Known

1909-D $10 MS65 NGC. Serious collectors of the Indian Head eagle series know the 1909-D issue for the rarity that it is. The second edition of the Akers Handbook notes that even MS64 examples are rare, and "Gems number no more than 15 coins." A quick check of the NGC and PCGS population data shows five submissions at NGC in Gem grade with three finer, while PCGS shows three in MS65 with six finer -- 17 submissions total at both services combined (6/12). This Gem NGC-certified piece shows a satiny texture over surfaces that exhibit a pronounced, even reddish color overall, intermingling with a hint of green around the obverse margin. As expected of the grade, the strike is sharp and there are no obvious signs of contact.(Registry values: N7079)
