Marvelous Two-Toned Gem 1909-S Eagle

1909-S $10 MS65 NGC. The year 1909 was one of transitions, numismatically speaking. The New Orleans Mint would officially close after 70 years of coinage operations. Despite a longstanding precedent against the "monarchical" portrayal of U.S. presidents on coinage--a precedent begun by George Washington himself--the centenary of Abraham Lincoln's birth would occasion a switch from the Indian Head to Lincoln cent design, marking the first presidential portrait on a U.S. coin and a major design shift that would ultimately embrace all U.S. minor coinage.
The 1909-S gold eagles were produced alongside the famous 1909-S VDB and 1909-S cents in San Francisco, although the third-year mintage of the new Saint-Gaudens design would spur little notice among the collectors focused on the sensational new cents. Neither would the nominal mintage of 292,350 examples of the issue, but examples are conditionally quite rare at the Gem level. NGC and PCGS combined have certified less than two dozen MS65s, with another dozen finer.
This piece is a marvelous original Gem with two-color patina--rich orange-gold alternating with lilac and hazel--that covers most of the obverse high points and the left-side reverse. Generous luster proceeds from well-struck surfaces, and only a small patch of tiny ticks on the Indian's cheek precludes an even finer grade. A super example for a type set or a world-class complete set. Census: 8 in 65, 5 finer (6/10).(Registry values: N4719)
