Description
Breathtaking 1909-S Eagle, MS67
1909-S $10 MS67 PCGS. The 1909-S ten dollar Indian Head saw a mintage of 292,350 pieces, and is very scarce in Mint State, with most coins in the MS60 to MS64 grade range. It remains one of the most difficult issues in the entire series to locate in Gem condition. PCGS and NGC have certified fewer than 25 Gem specimens, less than 10 Premium Gems, a mere three Superb Gems, and a solitary MS68.Interestingly, the 1909-S was virtually impossible to obtain in Uncirculated condition prior to the discovery in the late 1970s of a hoard of about 60 specimens, sold intact by Ron Gillio to Jim Halperin of New England Rare Coin Galleries. Since then, a few other small hoards have been discovered.
Gold specialist David Akers writes in his 1988 A Handbook of 20th-Century United States Gold Coins that Uncirculated 1909-S tens from the late 1970s hoard graded mostly MS60 to MS63. Only a few reached the near-Gem level, and none finer. They were, however, according to Akers, generally well struck, exhibited average to slightly above average luster, and tended to be an attractive greenish-gold and rose in coloration. He goes on to note that non-hoard specimens that he has seen display similar patination, but a few are rich yellow or light coppery-gold.
The Superb Gem specimen being offered in the current sale displays the rich yellow patination alluded to above. Both sides reveal a somewhat frosty finish, and exhibit potent luster. A well executed strike leaves sharp, uniform delineation on the design elements. A few minute unobtrusive marks do not detract, and might very well preclude the attainment of an even higher grade. The aficionados of quality gold coinage will not want to miss out on the chance to acquire this breathtaking specimen for inclusion in a top-shelf collection. Population: 2 in 67, 0 finer (11/08).
