Fabulous 1910-D Eagle, MS66

1910-D $10 MS66 PCGS. Though it is a slightly unconventional choice as a Saint-Gaudens eagle type coin, the 1910-D more than satisfies the usual collector criteria. Certainly, mintage is no object; with over 2.3 million examples coined, it has the second-highest production for the series, behind only the 1932, and represented a record high for the denomination and mint. The chief obstacle to the 1910-D eagle's acceptance as a type coin is a low savings rate in the standard Mint State grades, which makes it less available than the heavily repatriated issues such as the 1926 and 1932. At the Premium Gem level, the 1910-D is a condition rarity but one that is plausible to acquire, with 25 pieces listed in the PCGS Population Report, though that service has graded none finer (11/08).
In addition to its considerable availability, the 1910-D offers other type-coin positives. Chief among them are its solid production values, as noted in The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Phillip H. Morse Collection:

"Typically, the striking definition on the 1910-D is quite sharp, including most of the detail on the headdress and the eagle's wing feathers. The surfaces are softly frosted, as expected on most Philadelphia issues of the period, with the fine granularity seen on all 1908-1916 tens. Generally coins fall in the light to medium orange-gold or greenish-gold color range."

The present coin is an exemplary match for these facets. Subtly green-gold surfaces offer powerful luster with a delicate aura of frostiness to the finely textured fields. The strike is pleasing, if not absolutely sharp, in the centers. Both sides offer remarkable preservation, with only a few minor faults visible in out-of-the-way areas. Whether one is looking for a high-end type coin or adding this intriguing, occasionally paradoxical issue to a fantastic date set, this Premium Gem should fulfill every wish.
