1911-D $10 MS63 PCGS. 1911 was the last year that the Indian Head ten dollar gold pieces were produced with 46 stars on the edge, as two stars were added in 1912 with the admission of New Mexico and Arizona as states. The 1911-D is a key issue as an eagle, in addition to its similar key date status in the quarter eagle and half eagle series. In 1911 the Denver Mint produced only 30,100 ten Indians, the lowest figure of the entire series. The 1911-D is an extremely difficult issue to track down in any grade. The average grade for specimens currently certified by the two major services is 53.6; while the most frequently-seen grade designation is AU58, where a surprisingly high number of coins (287) have been seen.
Garrett and Guth (2006) make the following observations about this issue:

"The low mintage combined with the dismal survival rate leaves collectors with very few to choose from. David Akers notes that the finest example known is the Norweb coin, which currently resides in an Eastern collection. All Indian Head eagle collections are judged to some degree on the quality of the 1911-D issue.

The '11-D is especially challenging for collectors of Mint State specimens. PCGS and NGC have graded only 118 Mint State pieces each (an interesting coincidence), as of (11/08). Of those 236 coins, however, only 61 have been certified at levels greater than MS62, with 32 designated as MS63, and a mere 29 examples finer. According to the authors of The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens (Ivy Press, 2006), one reason for the lack of availability of Mint State examples is that "almost all of the freshly struck coins were dispersed quickly into circulation, with few held back by collectors."
This is an original example of this scarce issue. The surfaces are satiny with mildly variegated orange-gold patina on each side. A few light field marks explain the grade. This is a rare opportunity to acquire this key date and major condition rarity in the ten dollar Indian Head series.
