    Marvelous 1911-S Gem Eagle

1911-S $10 MS65 NGC. The 1911-S, from a mintage of only 51,000 pieces, was almost impossible to find in Mint State condition prior to the discovery of a small hoard in the 1970s. David Bowers, writing in his American Coin Treasures and Hoards, says: "A hoard of 60 is said to have been found in the Philippine Islands circa 1976, transshipped to Spain, and then to New England Rare Coin galleries."
This marvelous Gem displays dazzling luster and even peach-gold color on both obverse and reverse. A solid strike left its mark on the design elements, bringing about great detail in the Indian's hair strands and headdress feathers, and on the eagle's plumage. There are no marks of consequence. A few toning spots near the reverse rim at 3 o'clock may serve as pedigree markers. Census: 13 in 65, 2 finer (6/07).

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
