    Gem 1911-S Indian Eagle
    Seldom Seen So Fine

1911-S $10 MS65 PCGS. CAC. The 1911-S Indian eagle was produced to the unusually low extent of a mere 51,000 pieces, although the issue is overshadowed by its still-lower sibling, the 1911-D, which saw a mintage of 30,100 coins. Nonetheless the 1911-S is a well-respected series rarity, even despite the discovery in the 1970s of a small European hoard of 30-40 high-grade coins. Writes Mike Fuljenz in Indian Gold Coins of the 20th Century:

"The fact that there was a decent sized hoard of Gem 1911-S Eagles at one time should not deter the advanced collector from according this date a high level of respect. These coins have been long since dispersed and, today, no more than one or two Gems are seen at auction on an annual basis."

The present specimen, with CAC sticker, is a marvelous representative of the issue. Abundant luster is the most obvious attribute, but virtually mark-free, mattelike surfaces and glorious apricot-gold coloration are equally impressive. Population: 22 in 65, 9 finer (9/10).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 28GV, PCGS# 8870)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
