Description

1911-S Indian Eagle, MS66
Top-Grade Rarity, Remarkable Color

1911-S $10 MS66 PCGS Secure. Ex: Kutasi. The 1911-S Indian ten is elusive in all Mint State grades, but the present Premium Gem example is at the top of the ladder. This piece is tied with just 11 others as the finest known of the issue. The 1911-S eagle had a mintage of only 51,000 pieces -- the second-lowest in the With Motto portion of the series. Most known examples of this issue grade in the XF-AU range or at the low end of the Mint State category. Mike Fuljenz, in Indian Gold Coins of the 20th Century (2010), writes: "PCGS has graded nine examples of this date in MS66 with none better but it is unlikely that this many superb pieces actually exist." Our Auction Archives show only nine previous offerings of a Premium Gem example, including two previous appearances of this piece and duplicate appearances of at least one other example. The last top-grade 1911-S ten that we handled was a PCGS coin in the Chicago Signature sale (Heritage, 8/2011), which realized $38,812.50.

The present example displays a bold strike and glistening mint luster that glows in the beautifully preserved fields. Only a few faint grazes below Liberty's chin and near the final A in AMERICA prevent an even finer designation. Each side displays vivid rose, lavender, and tangerine-gold hues, delivering exceptional eye appeal. Population: 10 in 66, 0 finer (6/16).
