    Two-Toned Gem 1912 Eagle

1912 $10 MS65 PCGS. The mintage of the 1912 eagle was a largish 405,000 pieces, nonetheless quite a bit smaller than the ubiquitous 1926 and 1932 P-mint issues. Gems are nonetheless scarce today, however, and any finer-graded example is a rarity. The present satiny Gem offers unusual but gorgeous color, as wheat-gold hues prevail over most of the obverse and the eagle on the reverse. Intense orange-gold color is the rule above Liberty's head and through the reverse fields. The strike is somewhat soft on the Indian's hair but well-impressed elsewhere, and there are few marks of any severity. PCGS has certified 25 submissions of the issue at the Gem level, and there are 10 finer (8/11).

Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
