Description

Exceptional MS66 1912 Ten Indian

1912 $10 MS66 NGC. Among Philadelphia Mint ten Indians, the 1912 is one of the more frequently encountered. It is also often used as a type coin. However, there is a sharp drop-off from MS64 to 65 (388 vs. 69 coins graded), and even more precipitously from MS65 to MS66 with only 27 pieces certified by the two services combined (8/07). While this issue is known for frosted, granular surfaces this piece seems to have received an extra dose of each. The mint frost seen here is comparable to that on S-mint gold, and each side has a pronounced, large-grain texture. Magnification reveals a couple of shallow marks on the face of the Indian--seemingly the only abrasions present on this magnificent coin. The bright yellow-gold surfaces have just the slightest accent of reddish patina. (Registry values: N4719)
