    Condition Rarity 1912-S Eagle, MS64

1912-S $10 MS64 NGC. The 1912-S Indian Head eagle is a remarkably difficult coin to find in the higher Mint State grades, where it is a real condition rarity. The average certified survivor from the original mintage of 300,000 pieces is only Choice AU or thereabouts. The present near-Gem exhibits pronounced mattelike granularity, with satiny mint luster and excellent overall appeal. The piece is remarkably clean, with reddish-gold coloration and only a couple of mentionable marks consistent with the grade: one diagonal mark behind Liberty's mouth and a couple of minor ones in the left obverse field. Census: 36 in 64, 9 finer (1/11).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 28GX, PCGS# 8872)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
