Description
Desirable 1912-S Gem Ten Dollar
1912-S $10 MS65 NGC. The 1912-S is one of the most challenging Indian tens to locate in high grades. This leads David Akers (2008) to say: "Factoring overall appearance and eye appeal into the equation, the 1912-S emerges as one of the rarest issues in the series." The reasons for Akers' assertion follow: first, the typical 1912-S is one of the most poorly struck coins in the series; second, the luster is usually below average; and third, the typically encountered specimen has numerous distracting abrasions. This Gem offering displays pleasing frosty luster residing on its honey-gold surfaces. The obverses design elements are sharply struck, including decent definition in the hair curls, an area that is generally weak. The reverse features are also well impressed, save for the usual weakness on the eagle's shoulders. The obverse surfaces are nicely preserved and yield a pleasing smooth appearance, while the reverse reveals a handful of light to moderate marks. The overall eye appeal of this '12-S may not rate a perfect "10," yet it stands well above the typically encountered specimen. Census: 6 in 65, 2 finer (4/09).(Registry values: N7079)
